Food Drive

November 3, 2007 - Volunteers sort the variety of food that was being brought to the Pilgrim church and the Food Pantry today as part of the Scouting for Food project.  If you were hesitant about putting the bagged food out by your mailbox in this rain, you can always leave the donated food at the various churches around town or at the Food Pantry itself located at Pilgrim Church.  The food Pantry is open Tuesdays 7:00 to 8:00 PM and Fridays 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

November 3, 2007 - Mr. and Mrs. Walter McClain applaud as their son Julian is presented as a graduating senior Algonquin Regional High School Football player at the parents of senior football players and cheerleaders ceremony at last night's football game.

3rd Annual Holiday Boutique

November 3, 2007 - Shoppers gather to look over the hand made crafts at today's Southborough Crafters and Artisan’s Guild.  The shop is held today and tomorrow at Cordaville Hall at the Southborough Senior Center.  If you didn't get to make it there today the crafters will be there again tomorrow from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Making the Ramp

November 3, 2007 - Sudbury Firefighters volunteer their time, labor and expertise in putting in a new ramp for a fellow Sudbury Firefighter and Southborough resident that has had to start using a wheelchair due to a medical condition.

November 3, 2007 - Algonquin Regional High School Marching Band and twirler with fire baton perform at half time at last nights football game against Milford High School.

Swan Dance

November 3, 2007 - More like a swan swim.  This swan was spotted on the west side of Middle Road at the causeway.

Breakneck Hill Road Accident

November 2, 2007 - The driver of this landscape truck and trailer lost control going north on Breakneck Hill Road yesterday.  There was a minor gasoline spill from the various landscaping equipment and the road was temporarily closed until Ted's arrived to tow the truck off the tree.  Only minor cuts and bruises were reported on the driver and passenger.

November 1, 2007 - Children at the library get to take guesses on just how many M & M's are in the jar.  Below children were able to do crafts and get treats at the library yesterday.

When you change your clock back an hour on November 4th, please change your smoke detector batteries. With the heating and holiday season upon us, it is recommended that you have fresh batteries in your smoke detectors. Starting this year, Daylight Savings time ends the first Sunday in November (not the last Sunday in October as in the past). Also, you should test your smoke detector weekly.

Southborough Food Pantry

The United Parishes Food Pantry is located at the Pilgrim Church, Southborough.  Hours are Tuesday 7:00 to 8:00 PM and Fridays 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

They are looking for crackers, cookies, tomato products, shampoo and any other item you are willing to donate. Thanksgiving is coming up fast too so think of items that could be used with Turkey dinners.  Please check the expiration dates of the items.  If you would like to donate a monetary contribution, please make checks out to Southborough Food Pantry and mail to P.O. Box 281, Southborough, MA 01772.  All contributions are tax deductible.

Fixing the bump in the Sidewalk

November 1, 2007 - That infamous bump on the sidewalk by the recycle dumpsters gets a fix by Joe.

 

Falconi Shell has been supporting boys soccer Boosters at Algonquin for the third year in a row!  Every Thursday during this soccer season, they donate 1cent per gallon of gas sold.  The money has gone toward costs for the end of the season banquet, and expenses not covered by the athletic budget such as coach’s training and special equipment.

Safety Rules on Halloween

October 31, 2007 - There will be lots of Batmen, Power Rangers, Witches, Ghosts and Goblins out tonight. Here are some safety hints for the little ones.  If you are driving be extra careful tonight on the roads.

Try to Trick or Treat while still daylight; If walking at night use a flashlight and/or reflective tape; Never walk alone; Smaller children should have at least one adult with the group;  Homeowners turn on your outside lights; Make sure there are no lit candles or pumpkins nearby the walkway where youngsters Halloween clothing could catch fire; children should never enter homes but stay outside the doorway to receive their candy; Parents should check all candy at the end of the night; Unwrapped candy should be discarded; be careful of masks as they can block the eyesight of little ones; Have fun!!

October 31, 2007 - This tire swing awaits a youngster to swing under it's golden leaves.

The Southborough Board of Health announces two Flu Clinics:  Thursdays, November 8 from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M and again on November 15 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 P.M.  The shots will take place at the Cordaville Hall Senior Center located at 9 Cordaville Road, Southborough.  Free, but you must bring your Medicare and/or Medicare Advantage card.  For details, call 508-481-3013

Marjorie Ann (Talbot) Welch

 

 

Marjorie Ann ( Talbot ) Welch, 83, wife of the late Paul R. Welch (2002), passed away October 27 2007 after a long illness.

She is survived by her son Paul T. Welch and his wife Susan of Grafton; grandchildren Marc and Kathleen Welch; great grandchild Dylan Welch; two brothers, Ted Talbot of Hamden CT, Jack Talbot of Eliot ME; one sister, Joann Lumino of Hampden ME; several nieces and nephews. Her other son, Mark Welch passed away in 2005. She was born September 2, 1924 in Medford, the daughter of the late John and Kathryn ( Kutt ) Talbot and lived many years in Southborough where she volunteered at The Southborough Public Library. Marjorie's greatest enjoyment was time spent vacationing with her family on the beaches of Cape Cod. She also enjoyed birding and was a supporter of The Mass Audubon Society.

A Prayer Service will be Wednesday October 31st at 1 p.m. in Roney Funeral Homes – North Chapel, 152 Worcester St. North Grafton. She will then be laid to rest with her husband in Rural Cemetery in Southborough. Her family will receive people from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home before the prayer service. Join Red Sox Nation Today at the Parade

 

October 30, 2007 - The World Champion Red Sox will be celebrating with Red Sox Nation today at Noon starting at Fenway Park and working along Van Ness Street and up along Boylston Street to Tremont Street passing City Hall Plaza.  The parade will kick off at Noon time.  There will be three stops for Jonathan Papelbon to show off his "Irish jig" with the Dropkick Murphys.  The stops will be Copley Square, across from the Parkman Band Stand on the Boston Common and at City Hall. Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox on their World Series win!!

Katherine F. "Kay" Murphy

 

 

97, died Mon, October 29, 2007, in Framingham. She was the wife of Frederick Murphy, who died in 1983. Born in Natick, she was the daughter of the late James & Annie (Kyte) Moran. She leaves her children Frederick L. Jr. and wife Judy, and Timothy J. of Hopkinton, James E. of Westborough and Joanne M. Sparks and husband William of Minnesota; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Her son Edward J. died in 2001. The Funeral will take place Friday, November 2 at 10 a.m. at the Callanan-Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church St., HOPKINTON, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 20 Church Street, Hopkinton. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Natick. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday, Nov. 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations may be made to St. John's Parish, 20 Church St, Hopkinton, MA 01748

Annual Southborough Fire Association Children's Halloween Parade

October 29, 2007 - About one hundred children and parents attended the annual Children's Halloween parade and party yesterday.  The parade started at Main Street by Mauro's cafe and all marched to the main fire station behind Engine 22.  At the station the children were asked to circle twice in front of the judges.  There was an array of costumes both store-bought and homemade.  Many were of a unique design.  Southborough Fire Captain Joe Hubley presents the Captain's Trophy went to the Ken and Barbie dolls and the Chief's trophy went to the chef and lobster.  Many other awards were handed out in other categories.  All were invited to drinks and snacks and got a treat bag.  Southborough News and www.southboroughfire.org will be posting more photos on the websites this week.

October 28, 2007 - Southborough Firefighters Association will be hosting their Annual Children's parade  with a line up at 4:00 pm in front of Mauro's Market. Treats and costume judging follows at the Southborough Fire Station.

Umm Umm Good

October 28, 2007 - Diners enjoyed sausages and pancakes this morning at St. Anne's parish Hall.  The event was sponsored by the St. Anne's/St. Matthew's Youth Ministry to raise funds to send the group back down to the south to repair and rebuild homes in the devastated Hurricane Katrina area.  The Youth Ministry puts on several Spaghetti supper nights and Pancake breakfasts every few months to raise the funds needed to help offset the costs for the boys and girls to take the trip.
